THE HISTORY OF KAPFENSTEIN CASTLE
After an eventful history of about 900 years, Kapfenstein Castle and Manor have been owned by the Winkler-Hermaden family since 1918. Built from the 10th to the 11th century by the Kapfenstein dynasty, the castle has witnessed many things over the centuries. The <strong>Castle Kapfenstein</strong>, a border fortress against Hungary, is an old defense and protection wall against the onslaughts from the east. Numerous remains, also from the older Roman period testify that the castle hill has been inhabited for a long time. The castle was probably built in the 10th or 11th century by the Kapfenstein (Caphenstein) dynasty, who took the name from the castle.
Today's <strong>name Kapfenstein</strong> derives from the Middle High German word "kaphen", which means to peek or gape - Caphenstein, the stone from which to look out.
